Courtesy on Departure
To host and hostess at the door,
Hand shaking as we go,
‘Tis courtesy to say once more
What they must surely know;
“Goodbye, it was so good of you.
Your party was sublime!
We’ve both enjoyed the evening through,
We’ve had a glorious time!”
We stay a moment in the hall
Before we take the road
To thank our gracious friends for all
The pleasures they’ve bestowed,
And as we turn to go away
we hear the stair clock chime
“Goodbye, goodbye,” again we say,
“We’ve had a glorious time!”
So from the host that’s known as Life,
When I at last depart,
Forgetting all the cares and strife
And every sting and smart,
Let me in that last hour ere I
Set out for realms unknown,
Shake hands with life and say: “Goodbye!
I’ve had a glorious time.”
