I have recently started a new jogging route through the centre of Paris and realised that whilst I know I went for 31 minutes (approximately, tracked approximately time from my radio) I had no idea how far I went, how quickly or at what steady pace. I was thinking on the way back that it would be great to have a device that recorded that. I was initially thinking something along the pedometer line but now I’ve discovered a fantastic watch that tracks your progress via GPS and then can be integretaded with google maps to give statistics etc. wheny you get back! Look out – I need to find a stockist in Paris and I’m having one. Undaunted by my lack of a personal GPS tracking device, I have used google earth to overcome this problem and present for you my route:
This route is 3.50 miles, which is substantially better than the 2.49 or 2.92 routes I used to do when a student back in Swansea (UK). It’s also better than the meagre 1.38 mile route which I had recently started here in Montreuil for the morning jogs which I will now re-consider / lengthen somehow. Frankly without Google Earth I feel the same after all of them.
My goal at the moment is to increase my comfortable speed to 8 mph (13 km/h). I believe my current 6.77 mph (10.9 km/h) to be a little poor.
I also calculated that each time I walk back from the centre of Paris when I’m out late it is a 4 mile walk. Fresh with excitement, I also drew the route I took when I first arrived in Paris last month and there were transport strikes. I walked 10.26 miles, three times in the first three days. Just enough I make it to qualify for a Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition!
Speaking of which… I’ve always wanted to complete my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award so I’m now looking into that with all haste since I know it takes 18 months and I have to have it completed by my 25th Birthday.
